depends on how "clean" you want it...

1. If you want only to refresh your system (with the assumption that your system and data are on different partition on the hard disk) you can use windows XP CD(make sure your boot sequence start with CD first then HDD) then do this step:
- Press any key to boot from CD
- choose which partition you want to install xp (choose to install fresh copy)
- format your system partition with NTFS system.
- After Windows installation finish, activate your windows copy then install all the drivers.
- Install latest windows XP service pack (if you dont have the latest)
- Install anti virus
- U can install any other software.

2. if you want it to be really really CLEAN ... use MAXTOR POWERMAX (u can download it from the source below) to format your hard disk on Low Level (like making your Hard Disk as on a brand new state!). After Low level finish, do this:
- Put your windows XP CD, create 1st partition (in case you want you divide your HDD to be on several partition). This partition will be your system partition.
- Continue windows installation
- After finish, go to control panel > administrative tools > computer management, then click disk management
- Create other partition here (as you like). If you want your HDD to be more in order change the drive letter as well (because usually the partition created by disk management will come after your CD/DVD ROM)
- Activate your windows copy then install all the drivers.
- Install latest windows XP service pack (if you dont have the latest)
- Install anti virus
- U can install any other software.

Dont forget to backup your data BEFORE doing this activities..

Good luck!

Yes, insert your XP cd in the drive and reboot, when it asks to boot from your cd-rom press enter. During the install process it will ask if you want to format your hard drive, select full format to erase your hard drive otherwise data may still be retrievable.

Unless you've done this before or have someone with you, my suggestion is to take it to someone to do this for you. Luckily, when I had to do this, it cost me only $40 and now my computer is back to acting like it is brand new.
