For 4K you can have a well established home based business, and be able to earn a nice income, along with 50% profit on all items sold!
The only legit work from home business I have found is the one my wife and I do. It's well established and, you can make a nice income (even 6 FIGURES a year)!
My wife and I both have a home based business, that we do part time and make any where from $800 to $1500 a month just working part time from home. lots of things, food catering, car wash & polish, maid/janitorial service, delivery service etc etc etc ...... but what's your specialty?
Don't look at what you can start with 5K.
Look at what you know best and how you can start within 5K and generate income from there if that's all the seed money you have.
Doing what you know best is the best possibility of not loosing the 5K that you have rather than something you don't have any knowledge of.

Start a company, open a bank account with your saving, make a business plan (pick any from other responses) and apply for a loan. For a new company you can get 50K easily.
now you have about 55K - if you invest 55K properly - you can make 5-6K per month with out any problem.
