Basically:

APA (American Psychological Association) is the scientific approach to citing of the two. It is more concerned with recent citations, as scientific research generally requires articles, etc. to be more recent. APA is more of a 'quick' reference for readers to follow after reading a publication.

MLA (Modern Language Association) is the more literary approach to citing. It is not concerned with mostly recent publication dates. MLA citations contain a bit more information than APA is concerned with.
