Some friends of mine kept going on about how great new Battlestar Galactica is. Knowing I'm a big fan of Doctor Who and Babylon 5, they thought I would love it.

So, I bought the pilot and the first series on DVD. I have now watched the pilot and the first two episodes, and I'm not particularly impressed. I'm not saying its bad - reasonably enjoyable I suppose, but not great either. Does it get any better?

Thank you very much for all your opinions both for and against the new BSG. All very much appreciated. I have to say that I haven't really made my mind up about it yet though.

I think I'm now encouraged enough by the comments here to watch the rest of the first series on DVD. Then I'll decide whether to go on watching subsequent series from their.

Its impossible for me to choose a best answer here, since there were a lot of very good points both for and against, and I'm not sure which side to take yet. So I'll let this one go to the vote I think.

In my opinion, no it doesn't. I'm a fan from the original Battlestar Galactica that was run in the late 70's/early 80's, where Lorne Green played the part of Adama. While the general premise of the new show is roughly the same as the old, it is far more dark than the earlier series. Indeed, despite being a nearly extinct species, the humans of the fleet still engage in their trivial disputes amongst each other, rather than focusing on the grander goal of survival.

Frankly, after watching the first season, I lost my taste for the new episode and really don't give a damn about it anymore.

Like many shows today, good TV writing addresses Character Development.

With just 2 episodes of the series watched, you are just BARELY scratching the surface as regards Character Development.

Once the writers have had the chance to introduce you to a new universe of characters (no pun intended), they begin to flesh out the series through their story lines.

I've found that I've been more interested in the new characters from the old. I was a big fan of the old series, but the two cannot compare. The current show is more 3 dimentional writing, whereas the old show was more 2D, good guys and bad guys.

The old Baltar was just a bad guy. The new one is a Genius, and is he Insane or truly evil? Each episode makes you wonder.

The old Starbuck was a Blonde-Haired Dude, true to his friend Apollo, had a smart-alecky mouth, and hopped from woman to woman. The new Starbuck is a Blonde-Haired Chick, HOT, true to the fleet, does things in an unconventional way and has an on again/off again passion for her friend, Apollo.

Keep watching, you'll be glad you did!

hay man i thought the same as u but give it a chance the pilot and the first few episodes i didnt like mutch but when they realy start to get in to the big fights with the cylons the series starts to really take shape. the secend series is much better then the first. but as i say as the story lines deepen the program gets more ingrosing. hope u like the rest of the series coz i think they are great.

Have to say loved series 1, thought it was bril couldnt wait for series 2, but sorry to say I have found that to be a total let down, i think its totally lost the plot, storylines are just weird and it has totally gone away from the original hunt for earth.

Probably not, I wasn't impressed either and tried to keep watching. I kept thinking it would get better but the storylines got worse IMO. Moore did well with DS9, but just doesn't have it for this one. It gets real unbearable at the end of the second season (when I finally stopped watching).

In my opinion...no it is not good....nothing can replace the original.....and I don't see how the new one can do that...replacing Starbuck with a woman....Dirk Benedict was Starbuck....nope....don't see how this show is still on with all the stuff they have done....Richard Hatch was Apollo too....the original is the best and only the best...
