He's not looking for oxygen he's skimming, that's when a fish skims the surface for any microbial sized foods that may accumulate on the surface of the water. But check your filtration and airation system as well to be sure he is properly oxygenated.

The water should be too "sparkling", because it has no longer cycled and it isn't breaking the ammonia down. this may reason the fish to flow to the exterior for oxygen. once you've a touch pump, you should set it up with a touch bubbler/air stone, till the water is elderly. Then, once you regulate the water next time, in person-friendly words change 0.5 of it, and use anti-chlorine drops. Goldfish can definitely be a trick to shop, so if you're valuable, pat your self on the again. No, it isn't from starvation. Fish will study that you're the man who feeds them and they're going to "beg" on the area of the bowl or tank.

i had a goldfish about a week ago, i learned that it is not meant to live in a bowl without filter.
there are two reasons why is this so,
1) lack of oxygen in the tank
2)mummy, give me some food!
i didnt get any chance to get any filter, so i put it in the artificial pond with other carb fishes. I bought another 3 goldfishes to keep it company,
happily swimming :)

ps: fish needs big area to swim in, it'll be happy as a cow

Do you have the right size Air Pump for your tank? Make sure that if you do there is NOT a crimp in the line if you have that type. Also you may need to Change the Filter, NOT the Bio Filter though as they need the Bacteria.

Goldfish need oxegenated water. They are also very dirty fish that put a lot of ammonia into the water. Get a good filtration system. It will take care of both problems.
