Not just German really, all of Eastern Europe seems to make really depressing movies.

I'm sure there are some exceptions, but the rule stands in general.

LOL - first of all: since when is Germany part of EASTERN Europe?

Apart from that: how many German movies do you know?

I do not think that many German movies are popular outside of the country, but the most successful German film is indeed a comedy - and trust me: the film is far away from being depressing: "Der Schuh des Manitu".

The most popular German movie in 2006 is a movie about the German football team. Not depressing either. Emotional and funny.

My favourite German film "Lammbock" is a comedy. So you may want to reconsider your opinion on German movies.
