Very (very) basic Mathematica question?

This is embarassing, but: I can't figure out where to input calculations in Mathematica 5.2. When I pull up a notepad under 'new', and try to input an expression, it doesn't compute. Say I put in 5+5, then press shift-enter...nothing.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks-

Whenever I click shift-enter (or enter twice) it solves the expression for me.

However, if it still doesn't, right click and say "Evaluate Cell", and it should work you ya =)
