The works (a collection of poems and 2 short stories) were published in a Philippine magazine in 1984. I don't have documents to prove they're mine, except the original manuscripts that I have on file... If I publish them now, say, in a book under my own name (or a pen-name, which would either be the same as or different from the pen-name used in the works in question), would I be legally liable in any way?

If it's your original work, you have the right to reproduce it. After all, who is going to prosecute you? Yourself? A defunct magazine? Go ahead and publish it. If you're still not comfortable, contact a lawyer in the Philippines.

I don't think there is a problem since the magazine is non-existing anymore. In any case you should be ready to support your contention that you were the real author for such works with the original MS.

Did you sign anything giving your rights to the publisher at that time and were you paid for that?
