I am with those who indicate that no excuse is the best excuse. I would tell the truth, and if necessary, if I wanted to keep my new job, I would simply let everyone the reunion has to be rescheduled or go on without me.
I realise it stinks but better to be up front with it than not.

Oh dear. Either come clean and produce evidence that the holiday was booked to back you up other than that pull a sickie and stay out of the sun (if you going somewhere hot) and dont come back with a suntan. Have a nice time.

I think its poss best to tell them the truth or get your partner or mum to call and say that you need the time off and you are not to know about it as its a surprise for your birthday

Sorry but they have to allow you to take your holiday, not your fault they didn't ask you if you had holidays booked at the interview and as you have told them they have to allow it, good luck and state your case.

Just tell them you've got a part time job with MI5 and unfortunatly you cant say anymore, otherwise you'll have to kill them. I find that works for me !!!
