Secularism is a philosophical position which argues that the world, especially past and current human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value. Secularists generally assert some or all of the following: there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator, a "true morality" is unknown, and secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has no truth, and no action is known to be preferable to any other. Secularism is often more of a charge leveled against a particular idea, movement, or group, than it is an actual philosophical position to which someone overtly subscribes.

What Does Secular Mean

In today's GLOBALIZED WORLD, there cannot be any artificial boundaries between nations and territories, except on the basis of Political systems. So too we cannot confine ourselves to individual religion and sectarian groups. Today we need to work out PRACTICAL SYSTEMS IN WHICH ALL PEOPLES OF THE WORLD COULD WORK IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF EQUITY AND INTELLECTUAL BRILLIANCE, wherein personal choices cannot be imposed on the community - whether in social circles or in professional circles.

Amongst the first few Statesmen stalwarts who had understood this in the right perspective was Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, who attempted to define and bring in some meaning to the ideas on SECULARISM and NON ALIGNMENT. For example, Nehru was personally against the practice of Lamp lighting/ Coconut cracking/ Pooja and other paraphernalia resorted to in all our Official/ Public Functions. This was because of the respect for the sentiments of people who follow various other faiths, and who do not consider these rituals as appropriate to their sentimentalities. The idea IS NOT APPEASEMENT OR PLAYING TO THE VOTE BANK, BUT TO THE SENSIBILITIES OF THE DIFFERENT SECTS. To understand this, we should note that many of us have great difficulty in mingling with some of the "extreme" Muslim oriented countries where women have to compulsorily wear "purdah".

Religion and ethnic culture are personal and regional. And, especially religious beliefs WILL HAVE TO BE HIGHLY PERSONAL and we cannot impose or dictate our rituals on other people believing in different faith. In India, for example, religious functions have become a mockery and cacophony, which is the TOOL of the Politicians to woo the community through playing to the gallery of local religious "fanatics". This foments great psychological and social troubles, sometimes resulting in riots and bloodshed.

Thus, UNLESS WE BECOME TRULY SECULAR, WHEREBY NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE THEIR RELIGIOUS DICTATES, EITHER THROUGH PUBLIC FUNCTIONS OR OTHERWISE, peace and tranquility cannot be achieved in present day globalized world.

The reply from Winston Smith is pretty much spot on as far as a definitive explanation goes. No matter how others may spin it the object is simply this. If there is no higher moral authority (God or Creator) who sits in judgment over you when you die, then hedonism is the only lifestyle that makes any sense. Live a life of debauchery. Pillage, rape and plunder, why not? If life is meaningless anyway, if there is no point in being "good" when there is no reward for being good nor punishment for being bad, why trouble with it? Grab all the pleasure you can before you disappear forever.

The fact that secularist don't do that, to me, is proof that they don't really believe there own assertions.

To Rick: Ethics? Why bother? A secularist would be far better served with thievery than ethics. Anyone who believes there is no judgment would be a fool to behave themselves.

There is a problem here created by those who want to use an excuse to do anything they want with power and politics and want to remain secularized from right religion to take advantage of people, versus those who want to keep religion seperate from a particular Church. Morality is taught in the true religion of God which is founded by Christ in His Church and is also founded in the Old Testament in Judaic Teachings. The early Fathers of our country tried to use a certain moral reasoning based on Judeo-Christian teachings which go hand in hand. Attempts in science to permit anything under the sun as though it were good for human life have broken down that understanding. Everything is not moral, especially if it is not right or reverent of the gift of life.

The greatest threat to our life, health, environment and the continuation of the human species, comes from those who want to make money and abuse power at the expense of the lives of children, the elderly, women and manhood. Those who want to make war, use nuclear power without appropriate
consideration of the effect on the environment and on the stability of the earth, and who believe science is some kind of panacea for all the ills that science itself is creating.

Only the moral teachings of the Church have any hope of bringing about right reasoning to people about correct use of resources and governance of institutions and peoples.

Governance goes hand in hand with wisdom taught by Christ and by the Father. We should not set the churches aside, but invite them to the table of discourse.

However, there are many who use myths and legends as some type of proofs of something and because of this, reason has lost ground and morality its groundings. These ways have no value to human life whatsoever.

Freemasonry has caused this confusion.

A very good example of this is the recent movie "Amazing Grace" where the moral teachings of the Church were instrumental in outlawing the Slave Trade in Britain. You will note that Thomas Jefferson is mentioned there, and that this effort took quite some time in our own country. If it were not for the churches, people would have no idea of right thinking or correct use of political activism at all. In fact, it was Washington and Jefferson and others who claimed that if our country would lose its Christian moral groundings, it would indeed fail. The very exposed difference between the two ways is the difference between what happened in the American Revolution vs. the French Revolution.

Another example of the necessity of the Church is that it was the expanse of monasticism in the Catholic Church that brought about education and ended the Dark Ages in Europe.
From there civilization spread and while there have always been problems with abuses of power on every side of the street, the Light of Christ has prevailed and the darkness has not overtaken it. And this is just as the Lord has promised.

Many different forms of government were tried, including a clericized form that was not very good to an insitutionalized religion which is also not good and something our forefathers tried to guard against in order to permit religious freedom. Most Americans educated in the traditions of American governance and law believe that God gave to our country a very sound tradition. And that is why it became such a beautiful nation, until the soul of our country was corrupted. We must reform ourselves and our Country by sound reasoning and reckoning to Truth and moral guidance.

it partially means both , but the important thing is to not do or commit any action that can offend the religion of other people , we should know how to control our religious feeling at times.

The more politicians steer away from religion and focus on the issue that really matter the better this country will be for it.

Winston Smith:
If you're going to post your opinion please frame it as such. Secular ethics are possible among other things. All that is right doesn't have to be based in religion or mythology.
