Every affluent society all across the planet had the feeling that it's morals were decaying and that that would be the end of them.
That's the love of the past some would call romantiscism.

In a world where philosophies and values have been devloped by an increasingly literate and educated population, I'd like to imagine we at least have the capacity to be kinder than ever.

Or perhaps all the souls currently occupying this world are here because they are not mean enough for hell and not nice enough for heaven, and so the level of mean will always be the same on this coil.

Yes I do and I also think people are much more to themselves these days. Years ago, there were neighborhood gatherings and neighbors would help each other build a house or trade food from their farms, etc. People really used to watch out for each other. Today, we all seem to be just worried about ourselves and our own families and no one seems to have time for much else. I don't think people have as much patience as they used to either. All in all, yes, I think people are meaner today than years ago. Too much stress and such a fast paced life we all live. It's sad.

I think that perhaps people are harsher today than they once were. These days, there are simply more people due to population increases, and that's putting a strain on everything. When there are more people, there are fewer services to go around, and I have a suspicion that people are intimidated by that fact. The response of many people, when intimidated, is to act in just the opposite way, and attempt to "bully" others to show that THEY are a force to be reckoned with. I think it results in people failing to be courteous because of their own fear of appearing weak.

Pace of life and requirements are both increasing. It is often feared, that there isn't enough for all. Hence a kind of mean and selfish attitude has set in - only, in some places, where the mentality is, in itself, of the scarcity type. Not so, with the abundance-mentality, bold people, who think and create win-win situations for all, in healthy and wealthy (wealthy = physically, culturally & ethically wealthy) societies.

honestly, i think people from today are more mean than the past because in today people are more greedy. lot at how businesses out in the world. everyone wants to be rich competing each other. do whatever it takes to be at the top. for example, cigarettes companies, just because making money making millions of people die a year. because greed they don't know that they are harming others and our environment. another great example is power. the war in iraq. lots of people have different opinions. however i think it's just U.S. want to show how much power they have in the same time i guess they want to protect themselves. i don't know. all i know is that because of their actions killed many people, wasting lots of our tax money. thanks for reading

yes, I think that many parents that are younger and having children arent teaching respect of others. They are allowing their children to voice their opinions openly and "loudly" even if they are rude or disrespectful. When these children get older, they are loud mouth abusive people because they don't know its not right to treat others this way. They are used to getting their own way and throw a fit if they dont get it. So because of this, I think a lot more people are "mean"

I wouldn't say meaner, I'd say less willing to hide the fact that they are mean. People once had manners and covered up their real opinions for it wasn't "polite." Now people don't care about being polite.
