I lean pretty heavily right and am kind of grounded in my upbringing that the individual should work to make themselves whatever they have the desire and energy to do, that there are no guarantees in life and nobody said life was fair. It can be a struggle but if you keep your nose to the grindstone in the end you will succeed. I am pretty hawkish also, but see there are times we should not have our troops in harms way. Iraq is a tough nut...if it was not in the middle east (where our national interest is obviously very high) it would be a no brainer, being there it is very complex...I think the WMD thing was a failing of the administration not to get good enough intelligence and not to plan sufficiently on the rebuilding stage after we toppled saddam, but I think we need to hang together as a nation and get the best possible outcome now...if we just pack up and leave every serious person knows there will be hell to pay. Even Hillary recognizes that, and I give her credit for standing

To Bob M...I am a whitebread boy raised in cocoa beach florida...former marine, college grad...what do I have in common with paris Hilton? Nothing. But what does that have to do with the price of rice in china?

We need more people like you. I am sort of middle of the road too. I see good and bad points on both sides. I just don't think they (extremists) will ever give up and I have to wonder if the Iraqi people have what it takes to rule their own country. How long is long enough?

Like yourself I am also pretty right leaning. I agree that politicians now seem to be much more concerned with political advantage instead of doing what is the most important for the country.

The only other thing I have to say is reference WMD. I'm retired military and I get very frustrated by the lack of knowledge about the military of the American population as a whole. People do not understand what constitutes a WMD or what the capabilities of that weapon are. One week into the invasion the US forces came across a warehouse that contained 13 Scud missiles (banned by the cease fire from the first gulf war) that were set up to carry chemical weapons. Given Saddams known capacity for chemical weapons use, this constituted enough WMD capacity to wipe out 13 major cities (probably in Israel) killing hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. In 2004 in El Anbar Province a unit from the 101st Airborne came across a buried stock-pile of 155 mm Artillery shells (greater than 300 shells) that where filled with nerve agent. Once again, this represented the capacity to kill millions of people . Later in 2004 the 101st Airborne found two portable biological labs (could be used to produce medicine, but if so, why where they buried in the desert) that could produce enough biological weapons to wipe most of the east coast of the United States.

Of course if you listen to the media and the anti-war crowd, no WMD's were found. My question would be then, what exactly do they classify as WMD's, since we already found enough capacity to kill everyone in this country at least once.

That whole idea is great but I don't think it will ever happen. When you have two sides who are both convinced that THEIR side is right and how can the OTHER side think the way they do, then no, not a chance. Just like you said, you have an upbringing of thinking a certain way, pretty hard to change a lifetime of beliefs. The same goes for compromise, usually it's a kind of 'my way or the highway' mentality. It would be nice. I'm as guilty as the next person, even though I do try. Respect would be a good thing though, something that seems to be getting lost.

What disappoints people is the "go it alone" attitude this administration has had until everything started falling apart. This past 6 years has pushed me to the left. At every turn this administration has made the worst choice possible and everything has turned out predictably bad.

You bring up a good point about us not leaving abruptly. We broke it so we're responsible to not just leave everything a mess in Iraq. I agree we need some semblance of stability.

It's just a shame that Bush can't pay the true price for this blunder. He should have never won in 04 and will be regarded as the worst president in the past 100-150 years...

A house divided against itself will fall. America is the most divided society in the world. People are subdivided by race, money, ethnicity, language and so on. What does a poor black person in Detroit have in common with Paris Hilton? Absolutely nothing.

Yes. How can we expect different countries and cultures to get along when American citizens can't respect others with differing opinions.
