Congrats on the tickets! I would recommend seeing the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine, Sensoji Temple, the Ginza and of course, Mt. Fuji (about an hour by train from Tokyo or two hours by bus). There is just so many things to see and do, I could go on and on and on. These are the things that I tell friends to go and visit.
The best time to go would be in the Spring or Fall as the weather during that time is perfect. I would suggest the Sping, like the end of this month as the Cherry Blossoms will be in bloom and there will be a lot of festivals for the ocassion. If you want to hike Mt. Fuji, that's only available during July and August and then only for a few weeks. The weather in Tokyo compares to the weather in the southern US in that it is very humid during the summer as well as very cold in the winter.

I just got back from Japan, and I visited Tokyo on my trip. I'd go there in the spring, maybe April or May (maybe not during Golden Week though, http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2282.html).
BTW, that web site is the best for info regarding Japan.
I'd visit the most interesting parts of the city as listed here
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2164.html
I personally liked Odaiba very much, very futuristic, but also some nice parks there, which a rarity in Tokyo.
Also I'd try to visit some other place outside of Tokyo, maybe Nikko or Kamakura.

In May you have Kanda and Sanja Matsuri. Late March and early April you have Cherry Blossoms everywhere.

There is sooooo much to do and many amazing things to see but I have to say you really must experience staying in a pod hotel. It's like being in a drawer in a really flash morgue......... The one thing that always comes up in conversations about Japan - nowhere else would be that ingenious....
