Genji is written to be the ideal man--he is kind, poetic, considerate. The women of the story fall in love with him because he tries to understand their point of view in life, while the men in the story like him because he's humble and avoids boasting about his various accomplishments.

He's even supposed to smell great. :)

I'm only 150 pages into the book and am wondering that myself. Apart from being hansom, his plus points seem to kind of run out there.

Then again if he had have been a goody two shoes, the book would be pretty boring right?

I guess, given the chance, a lot of men would like to follow his path - although they shouldn't.

Do you mean Genji Monogatari? If you do, I guess he is a hero that doesn't kill anyone to show his strength or virility.
