I am a voluntary helpline worker, and a duty of care and response does not enter into it, unless your caller is revealing his or her identity, or personal details.

All my callers are anonymous and we use first name terms only and the advice I give is exactly the same as the advice they would receive if they attended one of our meetings.

Treat all callers sympathetically and give them the best advice that you can, you have no duty of care, nor the right to insist that they follow it.

A duty to do everything reasonably practicable to protect others from harm. You are dealing with vulnerable people who perceive themselves to be in some form of trouble and distress and it is important to help them as much as possible by what you say to them in order to help them deal with the problem.
