why do we need friends?

We don't know on several occasions whether our actions and approach to life are right or not. Therefore we need friends who can share with us nuances of life and make us take a decision, and help us arrive at a decision. This does not mean that two friends often do the right things. It depends on what kind of friend you have. Friends can help solve the problems and they can add to them also. But this does not mean that we should not seek friendship. In life we often regret for not having done something than for what we have done. Life is an an experiment.

Bad associations spoil useful habits. Children are a gift from God, no where does it say that friends are gifts. A good friend is a gift for sure but not just anyone just to say: "I have a friend!" We must be selective as to who we accept in our lives as "friends". Friendship is cultivated and takes time. The more you find out how much you can count on and trust the person for telling you the truth, the more loyal they become, the closer to being a friend is what they become and remember that to have a friend, you must act like a friend. To answer your question, I'd say that we need friends because a good friend will bring out the best in us and often help us become the best that we can be as humans.
