in a particular lecture this guy usually sits next to me, but i don't really warm towards him. it's a combination of several things; garlic breath, speaking too softly, speaking DURING the lecture, reading my comic strips before the lecture before i've had a chance to, being a smart*ss & just general irritating things like that. i do ignore him when he talks during the class, but i don't want to be rude or bitchy otherwise.

it's especially hard when we bump into each other outside of class & he seems to want to have a long rambling conversation, most of which i won't even hear! is there a way to take the familiarity down a notch?

I'd just stop talking to him. Be polite, but make yourself seem in a rush, too busy to talk outside of class & too busy trying to pay attention in class.

It has been my experience that most people pick up on that you are not interested... and then leave you alone. Then there are those that, for whatever reason, do not pick up on it naturally. It sounds like he is too self-absorbed to even begin to think someone might not want to befriend him. If you don't want to be rude, you might just have to put up with it... and it might get worse (I had done that before, and regretted it). I suggest that you just tell him very matter-of-factly that you are not interested in socializing with him. It will probably upset him briefly, but he should leave you alone. Bad thing is, sometimes that does not even work!!! Then you are dealing with a nut... If that happens I don't know what to say! That happened to me only once, and I actually moved to another town/school to get away from the freak. The whole thing made me not want to be nice to anyone at all for a long time.

I have felt that way about someone on this site. It finally reached a point where I had to say something...that person put their own spin on what I said, as well as WHY I felt I finally had to say it....it was uncomfortable to be put in that situation.
One thing is for sure....no one should be depriving you of the opportunity to hear what is going on in class.....how about smiling and putting your finger to your lips to politely hush him?
I wish you the best of luck.
