I meant to ask why people say asian american men are short, not asian men in asia. There wasn't enough space allocated in the question part to type my question properly.

A lot of the times they see Asian Americans as not being American. kinda like the question "where are you from" signifies the fact that you are not from around here. The average American sees Asians as being short mainly due to diet. As to say that the diet is better in America that can be debated since we also have one of the highest obesity rates in the world. Really depends on how you ate as a child and growing up.

I am married to a man who is 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 American, and I have to say that I disagree with some of the previous answers. My husband is 5'10, which is taller than all of the Japanese side of his family, he obviously got his height from the American side. I can say this because I know each of his family members, and the previous post about the more dense population is crap! Most of his family moved to America and were raised on a cattle farm that they purchased upon arriving int he country, ironic considering how that guy answered the question, but true! They are STILL shorter than most Americans. It is in their genes, same as why they have darker hair and slanted eyes. And I love them for it, just the same as if they looked like any other American. In fact I love the idea of my children having that heritage, and I will make sure they are proud of it.
BUT, the question is why are they shorter, I say just because of genes. Not because of increased population or poor food. In fact as for poor food, my Japanese inlaws are healthier and live much longer than most Americans. One of my husbands great aunts (Japanese side) actually just died at 105! They simply eat healthier foods, and it doesn't cause their height. How many Asian people do you see who are extremely obese, not many!
And as far as the Americans go, they used to be short, as well! Have you ever visited an Antebellum home (pre civil war era)? Try to lay in one of the beds, I'm certain your feet will hang off the end. Try to walk up the stairs, I assure you, you will probably have to duck down a little, because the ceilings were shorter then, due to a shorter height! Pull out some clothes from back in the day, they were made for shorter, more petite people. (My family inherited several of these homes from our ancestors, and we've done lots of research!)
So mainly, I have no scientific answer for the question, but I can disprove many of the other people's answers, from examples in real life! My opinion: adaptation to surroundings and genetic disposition cause height differences!

Total BS. I have traveled abroad and asian facilities are tinier, bathrooms, beds. etc.
In fact, the Aerage European male is aproximately 5'11". Asian men ARE NOT that tall on an average. Average asian male is about 5'6". Aisan men are short. Sorry to be the one. Asian -american men are American, with asian ancestory living in America wher food, housing, everything is better than in the country of origin. Good nutrition lends a huge hand in growing asians taller than their ethnic coding.
Where is your source for this claim?

Obviously it's diet, it has always been that way. People in the far east are smaller because the population is so dense they do not have the space for cattle ranching, so the people over ther lack dairy products and protein. If you ever look at polynesians or asians from the upper parts of asia where the population is not as dense they can grow to be huge, a example is all those sumo wrestlers and Yao Ming. I am second generation and I am the smallest of my brothers at 5'8"175lbs, my older brother is 5'11 215lbs. and my little brother is 6'2" and 220lbs.

Asian Americans are as tall as Europeans; that I can accept, but who is calling them "short"? Europeans? No, White and Black Americans are calling them short because compared to them, these still are. If Asian Americans went to live in Bosnia, they would be about average height but they usually don't, do they?

Key words are Asian American. Does that mean they have Anglo ancestry as well? That would significantly change their hereditary predisposition to certain features.
