If you've had an annual gynecological exam + pap smear within the last year or two, you might be able to just get a prescription or samples from your doctor. Otherwise, he/she'll probably want to examine you and measure your blood pressure to make sure you're healthy enough for hormonal contraception.
My doctor will give 1-3 months of samples for the patient to try. If the patient is satisfied with the birth control and has no problems, she can call the doctor's office and they will then call in a prescription for her.
Hope that helps!

Im realy sure that you can insert it yourself all you need is the perscription. But! Its so much safer if you have your doctor do it for you. I know its VERY uncomfortable to let a doctor look down there, but its so much safer and you can ask for a women physicain so its not that bad!
Good Luck!

before you are prescribed any type of birth control, the ob/gyn doc should and must do a pap smear and blood work. it is very important that you have a baseline pap smear to confirm future normal paps.. a vaginal exam is important and should be done if you are interested in participating in sexual activity. allows check out if you a good candidate for any type of birth control, look up the risk and side effects, such as weight gain, spotting between periods, growing excessive body hair, etc GOOD LUCK
