To be an extra you don't need to take classes, get an agent or join SAG. You don't even need a headshot. There are extras casting agencies, in both NY and LA, and you just have to register with them. Do an internet search. The agency shouldn't charge you anything to register, except maybe a very small administrative fee of some sort. If they try to get you to pay them to find you work, or force you to take classes from them, it's a scam. BTW, many extras are not actors, they're just regular joes who do it for fun.

Register yourself on www.extras.co.uk.

It's free and there are regular casting calls and listings, but it is very competitive!! You'll need to log in every day if you want a chance of getting some work.

Also try www.castingcollective.com, it's not as good but it has good advice and suitable things come up occasionally.

Whatever you do keep away from pmglobalservices and those which charge you money to join.

Also if there is a specific soap or programme you wish to be in, write to the company, send a photograph too. I did that and got an extra part in the Harry Potter film!!

Hope that helped and good luck.

Bear in mind some low budget productions won't pay you, but the experience is great, and they give you free food and drink!

Professional productions will pay about £50-£100 a day if you're lucky!

Good luck again. Don't give up and keep trying and you will get something.

Xxx

Not sure what country you're in as there was a lot of talk about LA and NY. If you're in the UK you need to register with a Supporting artiste agency. Be careful who you sign with, do your research. You will have to pay a fee to be on their books but any good agency will take this from your first job and not charge up front.
I personally will recommend Guys and Dolls Casting, but they usually only take on new people once a year. A good place to look for agencies is a book called Contacts. Its published annually and they list every agent in the business.

Every soap is shot in N.Y. or L.A. They all fall under AFTRA jusrisdiction. Contact AFTRA and find out the addresses for the soaps where you live. They have casting people who handle the extras. Send them your pics and whatever else they ask for. FYI soaps are some of the most sought after work for extras. You can do it though. If you live in N.Y. or L.A. that is. Much luck to you.

Check the trade papers, Variety, Backstage, etc. Get headshots and a resume together. Look up Talent Agencies that specialize in Extra work. Act at a local theater or college to network with other actors to hear about opportunities.

Take acting classes. Get an agent. Read The Stage. If you are inexperienced, try Springboard UK (internet).
Good Luck!

First if you want to be on t.v. take some classes about it, and then move to L.A.

Do some local things, get an agent.

Look up on SAG for t.v auditions, or Backstate.com.

Extra's are still actors/actress'/models looking for a job.
