I was a full blown alcoholic for a year and I have finally stopped drinking so much. I do still drink though but on a much more normal level for a 24 y/o guy. I would like to stop altogether though b/c I am starting to see effects in my health. What are some things I could do to prevent myself from buying alcohol even if I want to at the time?

this is a hard thing to do but i comend you for wanting (and doing something about it) to quit. you need to keep yourself away from the things that make you want to drink the most ( bars, weddings, sporting events etc) the rest is up to you

Write on your license in an indelible pen: "Alcoholic - do not serve alcohol".

Join Alcoholics Anonymous - this is a group for recovering alcholics.

Good for you in realizing you have a problem and wanting to fix it. Most of the solution is down to your own self-will, but having a support structure around you, with people to call when you are tempted, will help you enormously.

Don't walk past the liquor store and avoid it at all costs.Think of something else you want that you'd rather spend on rather than alcohol. If you're saving up say, for a laptop or car. Think about how not buying alcohol will get you closer to that. Good luck!

Its all abt how u can control urself..its difficult agreed, but thats when u need ur mental strength and conscience to be at its best. Indulge in a good past-time, maybe pets or even books and music. Or u can also go for professional help.

My best wishes with u!

You need to meet somebody with chronic liver failure, because thats where most alcoholics end up. Having watched somebody die from it was shocking: yellow skin, yellow eyes, swollen abdomen which has to be drained every month, bleeding sores on the face, ulcers down the throat, pain and delium. thats something you can think about to stop yourself from buying alcohol.

Go to AA. You might think its lame but it really helps. Its common ground for you. Everyone there shows support for eachother. At least give it a try..dont let alcohol run your life.

first of all, seek counseling, AA, try to surround yourself with people who do not drink. and everytime you think about buying an alcoholic drink think of erectile dysfunction, diabetes, poor circulation and the possibility of doing something stupid that you will later regret while being drunk, like DWI of hurting someone or yourself..... take care and remember you can have fun sober.......

I used to just keep enough $ for bus fare on me, go to the bank and take out just enough for groceries & bus fare (put that in a separate pocket), do the shopping and go home, so I never had enough to spend any on drink.

appreciate your sober mind. Myself, I've banned alcohol alltogether and don't drink at all. Ask your self how do you want to feel tomorow,, sober or hung over.
