Booting from usb is an option if your computer has been built within the last couple of years.....

Enter the BIOS screen by pressing ESC, or delete while booting....
Then search for boot device, and set the first boot device to usb....

boot order

device 1. usb cd rom
device 2. hard drive

click on one of the devices and cycle through them to see if usb is optional....if you need more help im on instant messenger....

Check the BIOS sometimes there is a setting that allows this booting from external CD to be switched on. Also check to see if you are on the highest level of BIOS for that particular laptop as Bios updates sometimes add these features in. If it does not allow boot from CD you can search the web for the boot from USB stick. HP had a small program that allowed this. hope this helps.

so if your problem is that you want to install XP on external drive then it's simple
1. Boot from HDD of laptop
2.Conect Extern.HDD
3.INsert Xp CD and install it on the external drive

if you want to format main HDD
1.boot with your present windows
2.start the Xp setup
3.it would restart and ask you on which it should be installed
4.you can format the drive you want
and prob solved

Oh apparently like its attempting to start up homestead windows up, it thinks homestead windows continues to be there. examine your cable connections, and jumpers. attempt making a replica of your CD or borrow a acquaintances. basically use your product key. and how you suggested each thing, i'm guessing you've a dell. once you replaced your boot order did you tell it to save settings earlier quitting?
