I usually change money once I get through customs and immigration at Narita. Once you enter the arrival hall, look to your right and you will see the exchange windows. They are the local banks. You can exchange a few dollars or a few hundred. When you get to the window, just hand them the amount of dollars that you want to exchange and they will convert it to yen, give you a receipt to sign and then they will give you your money. Since it's the local bank, the rate will be the same as if you went to the local branch.

If you have traveler's checks, you will typically get a better exchange rate then with cash.

I wouldn't recommend changing money on this end as you will pay a higher fee through Travelex then when you get to Japan.

I'm assuming you'll fly into Narita. There is a place there you can exchange money. But your local bank should be able to exchange money. The banks here {Japan} exchange dollar to yen but I think you need an account to do so.

Best place to do it is at the airport, or a bank in Narita City, or a major hotel in Tokyo. Japan is not like Europe, most places (unless airport or major city) will not change money for you, so you must do it at the airport (to be safe.) But good news- most places do take credit card, there are ATMs available, but Japan is still a much cash- based society. And prices are high, so take lots of cash! GOOD NEWS- you won't need to tip at restaurants and places like that!

You can change your money at the airports or in money exchangers in your place before going to Japan. You can also go to the bank but they have a lower rate.

If you have friends in Japan that can give you the straight exchange rate, that would be the best for you. But if not, Banks will be your best bet. They uniformly charge 3yen on the dollar for exchanging money. So, if you see 117yen = $1.00 you are actually getting 114yen =$1.00.

Hope that helps.
