Well a starter tank is good, get tropical fish like neon tetra and one Pleco (he/she cleans the glass) you can get snails for your tank and i have some of them they are cool, you can get different colour snail, blue, green, yellow etc.
You have to do a water change every one to two weeks with tropical fish but they are worth it.
Have a look on ebay for snail for fish tanks, tropical snails and you can then see all the different snails you can get. Go to a good pet shop near you and have a look at he fish and ask for some info. Plus you need to set you tank up for a week before you put fish in so that it is settled otherwise you will come down in the morning and find all you fish dead. I did that when i first started with fish.

Good luck

Hmm...there's no such thing as a simple tank. Goldfish are cheap, but are also some of the dirtiest fish you can get (as far as the amount of waste they produce). Betta are relatively simple if you don't mind the weekly partial water change. As far as a scavenger type aquarium animal that'll clean the tank for you...well, they don't exist. Plecos, snails, shrimp, etc, will only eat plant matter and/or leftover food that the other fish didn't devour. No fish eats other fish waste. If you don't just want a single fish in a bowl, then you'll need to invest a lot more time in the beginning. After the biological cycle is in full swing in the tank (1-2 months), it usually only needs monthly maintenence. Some good starter fish are black tetras (and several other types of tetras), and white clouds. The trick is to be very stingy when it comes to feeding, and don't add too many fish at one time. A couple of general rules; 1 flake per average-sized fish once a day, and a gallon of water for each inch of fish. In the beginning only add 1-2 fish per week. Also be sure to test the ammonia and Ph levels frequently in the beginning. Most pet stores offer free water testing, or have test kits available for purchase. Easy?

a lazy fishkeeper only keeps dead fish

depending on species fish can live for anything from 1 to 30 years or more.

you are the best cleaner of the tank, any fish or "sucker fish" will only eat a small amount of algae if it's present, and will still contribute to the waste and mess in the tank anyway.

fishkeeping can be an expensive hobby, hardwork too, but rewarding if done right. if you don't think you can do weekly water changes and tank maintance, daily feedings, watching them carefully for illness and treating with medication if they get sick, not to mention the initial 2-4 week cycle which will involve looking after a fishless tank and preparing it before the fish go in. and keep this routine up for 2 years plus...maybe a fish is not for you?

however if you think you can buck up your ideas, and have a good budget planned, buy the largest tank you can, with filter and heater, contrary to popular belief it seems, tropicals are easier to keep in smaller tanks than coldwater (goldfish for example, say 3 goldfish would need a heavily filtered, oxygenated 50 gallon tank, no tankmates). a 15-20 US gallon tank is a good flexible starter tank for a nice beginners community tank.

say for a 20 gallon (once fully cycled) (this stocking will depend on your pH, mid-range pH of about 7.5 max best for this set up):
male/female Honey Gourami pair
6 harlequin rasboras
4 pepper OR bronze corydoras

You can start with a male betta. They are beautiful and relatively easy to care for. Just get one male betta, don't place 2 in the same tank or they'll kill each other.
Yes the sucker fish only eat away the uneaten food, they won't eat the other fish's waste, no creature does that..But if you want one of those then you'll need a bigger tank cos they grow pretty huge. Bigger tank means more maintenance, means desire for more fish. You don't wanna see a big tank with just one fish do you?
Snails are good, they too only eat the leftovers. With snails you wouldn't need a big tank. 5gallon would be good to house a male betta and a snail.

Suggest you start with coldwater fish as they are easier to keep. Have a filter in the tank to remove waste and aerate the water. you will have to clean the filter but wont have to do completely clean out the tank. Do a partial water change every couple of weeks (about a quarter of the water.
Fish - try goldfish, shebunkins and black moors for starters.

Just get a ten gallon tank with filter and small air pump, you usually can get these in a kit at your local pet shop.Get a bag of pebbles (colored)and follow directions. The folks at the store will be more than happy to help you get started. But like anything else, you must do a few things for yourself,Get off the couch and make something that you will feel great about after its finished,Good luck,

1st of all, do you really want a fish tank? Are you actually bothered to feed the fishes and clean the fish tank as it gets quite dirty, even fishes that suck up the dirt do not even clean out all the dirt. Other than that, if you are willing to do those things... get one.
