Because we're a social species who live in herds. For the most part the herd is identical. Originality helps one stand out within the herd. It's posturing. It's communicating your desire to rise above the rest and elevate your position in the social hierarchy. Achieving a higher social status betters an animals chance at survival and therefore any tools used to get it there have value.

It is because the world is always searching for something new... something different to make the everyday lives not boring. But it is said also that there is no more new in the universe... All things that new is not really new, it is done and has happened before. We can only change some of the aspects of this so-called new things to appear as new. Anyway, we have to think for things out of our very own mind according to what it is intended and not relying to what is already there. We should not be copycats! We should be continually searching for new things which can bring ease and breakthrough to our everyday's needs.

Do we?
Or do we value only that which substantially supports our current paradigm?
We like to pretend that we value originality but it it strays too far from what we are comfortable with we get frightened and are not comfortable with it at all. This fear of change is innate, and difficult for primates in general to deal with.
Once we become aware that we are doing this it gets a bit easier to handle change.

I'd like to say we do but to be honest, I don't thinks so. If we did everyone wouldn't want to have the same hair style, listen to the same music, have the same friends, etc. It seems as if most of us don't value originally until we are old enough (adults) to figure out that it is alright to be that way.

Its a sense of self. It makes you or me feel special about our own identity. Not just a nameless, faceless person in the crowd. The reality IS there is no such thing as orginality, we just like to think so to make us feel better about our choices.

It's a good thing to say. In all actuality, society does not value originality in my experience.
