Clematis..will climb well but no cover in the winter
Russian vine..very active but again dies back in winter
Sweet pea..again summer plant
Honeysuckle..good cover but like ivy varieties take a time to get established.
Plant all or some.of these, until they get established try covering trellis in some of that reed or bamboo matting you can now buy at garden centres to give instant privacy.

RE:
anybody know any good plants apart from ivy to grow on trellis?
I want to make my garden more private, have neighbours either side with 4ft fence's and trellis on top.I want to plant some good possibly fast growing plants that will cover the trellis. This is my first garden so it's all new to me, have no knowledge of out door plants at all.

Hello KA
1) Jasmine polyanthum
2) Virginia Creeper
3) Honeysuckle
Go on the Internet and type in climbing plants and you will have plenty to choose from.
I actually like Jasmine or Honeysuckle because you get such a lovely smell.

Clematis, Boston Ivy, HoneySuckle or Hydranga petiolaris ate all go alternatives to ivy. The fastest of these would be a Clematis armandi to cover and it is ever green with nice white flowers.

You could use any type of Clematis or a good one would be Russian Vine. It grows like a grape vine and in the Autumn the leaves will turn bright red. Also it has a good spread so after a short time your fence will be covered in it.

There are two Ivy plants that have that characteristics they are, English Ivy (the darker Green of the two), and Algerian Ivy (Lighter green in color). both these plants will grow from outside and work their way into your room, In older homes with old cracked stucco, they creep their right in and usually go up to the ceiling where they remain happy and grow well.

Depends on what you are wanting.
Grapes, passionfruit, tomatoes, climbing roses, melons, cucumbers, and squash can all be grown on a trellis!
I've put a link below which may help you more.

Sweet peas
They grow really fast and smell fantastic.
You just put a pot under the trellis and chuck some seeds in water it every now and then and hay presto!
No sweat no bother. :-) Good luck

Russian vine, It's very vigorous and will cover a trellis in no time at all. Don't expect grapes though. :-)
