Good question. I think that it has lost it's impact through over use. For instance - when you haven't heard what a person has said you say "sorry?"
We are living in the type of society where it is the norm to be self indulgent - and sorry is just another word.

I have mixed emotions Sweetie. I am sorry for every moan I have caused you. On the other hand I want to cause you more.

I say sorry way too much. But its more of a thing where someone is mad, they're not mad at me, but I feel the need to apologize. People get annoyed with me for saying sorry to much, lol.

There's a point when sorry is not enough. There has to be action and not just words.

so many times that i stopped counting when i was 10, its a word that has no meaning any more, we need to replace it with something better

yes it is in many cases, but in some cases it isn't that it is over used so much as it it miss used.
