According to these sites (http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/P/Protists.html and http://www.estrellamountain.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/BioBookDiversity_3.html), they are neither plants nor animals. In that case, what are they? Any help would be very deeply appreciated, thanks!

Aren't they protists? Part of the kingdom protista...so no it's not a plant or animal. I'm pretty sure their protozoans.

An explanation of protozoa vs algae btw...they are both unofficial subclassifications of protists. It's just that protozoa are more similar to animals and algae are more similar to plants. They are not necessarily animals or plants. It would be impossible anyway since they would belong to 2 kingdoms in classification.

If you trace the history of their classification, they have been placed in different groups at different times, and respected scientists have argued about how they should be properly classified. The only answer you can be given could only be what the majority of scientists seem to agree as to their classification at the present time - but stick around, I'm sure it will change again!
