Too many problems with his wheelchair on stage. Miking up his speech synthesiser was a nightmare.

The Hawkins in the Darkness left because he was addicted to drugs/drink and could not get clean while in a group and on the road all the time. However, I think he was just fed-up with the way of life he was leading.

He left due to drug addiction.
In August 2006 it was reported (and later confirmed by The Darkness' management) that Justin Hawkins had been admitted to The Priory, a rehabilitation clinic. [5] On October 11, 2006 Hawkins revealed spending £150,000 in three years on cocaine after cracking the charts in 2003 with their single I Believe In A Thing Called Love. [6] When he realised he was no longer in control of himself due to drugs and alcohol, he joined a one month addiction-treatment in The Priory.
Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA, (born 8 January 1942) however is a British theoretical physicist. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He is known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes, and his popular works in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general. These include the runaway popular science bestseller A Brief History of Time, which stayed on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.[1]
His two most important scientific contributions up until now have been providing, with Roger Penrose, theorems regarding singularities in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical discovery that black holes emit radiation, which is today known as Hawking radiation (or sometimes as Bekenstein-Hawking radiation).[2] His scientific career spans more than forty years. His books and public appearances have made him an academic celebrity and world-renowned theoretical physicist. In May 2006 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Arts.

I can only, presume, that you refer to JUSTIN HAWKINS, my friend! Please, don't get CONFUSED!
Justin Hawkins, WAS, - IS, - and, will ALWAYS BE, - what is known, as a "NON-ENTITY", in terms of "RELATIVITY"! It is true, that, - for a time, - he DID enjoy SOME success, - but, it was SHORT-LIVED!
Professor STEVEN HAWKING, on the OTHER hand, - is one of the World's GREATEST-EVER scientists, - a man who is confined to a WHEELCHAIR, - and UNABLE to speak, - owing to the debilitating effects, of "MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE"!
And, - to ANSWER your question, - WHY NOT WRITE, via his FAN CLUB, - TO Justin Hawkins, - and ASK him, why he DID what he did?

I don't know about 'Steven'....but if you mean 'Justin'.....It appears he left to pair up with a black girl so he could accuse the whole of the U.K of being racist and stupid because they didn't win a pointless talent show. What a shame he used to be good.
