I have to say that I don't agree! My husband and I have this argument all of the time! I tend to find that the pople who make this argument, are people who don't have a degree and are trying to justify their reason for not having one! So many jobs, no matter what or where, require a degree to even submit an application!
The other night, while eating dinner, I saw a sign for the rest. manager position that was open, and had to point it out to my husband. The sign said, if you have a college degree and would like to be hired for a management opportunity within our company, please submit your application. Then below where the position was listed, it stated Rest. Manager! So even to manage a Rest. you need a degree these days!!!
This isn't to say that you can't do very well for yourself without a degree. Take my husband for example, he is a supervisor within his company and still makes a great living without a degree. His company was willing to send him to job specific training, in place of a degree. It's possible to find places like this, they just aren't as abundant as those who require a degree!
Most companies like to hire people who are job ready and don't require much training, which is why they like that degree! Plus a degree shows that you can stick with something and not give up!It can show your intelligence as well as your persistance!
Also, having a degree should give you a sense of accomplishment. You have completed a higher level of education than most, be happy and proud of it!
Who you know in life helps, but in some jobs, who you know can't make up for what you know! I don't want a doctor treating me that got there only because of who he knew! I don't want a lawyer handling my case that skated through life because of who they knew! Need I go on!

That is true to a degree (no pun intended). It is because today thanks to student loans and generous financial age packages, just about anyone can go to college. It's not like the 60s or 70s where people who could afford it went. Today, just about everyone is getting a degree which means that it is harder to get into the white collar world with just a degree from State U. Who you know does definitely play a part in it. What's really crazy is that when you can't crack the White collar world with your BA from State U and you decide to settle on a job stocking shelves at Kroger or flipping burgers to pay bills and not be a burden, they won't hire someone with a degree because they see that person as "overqualified" and as someone who will bolt when he or she gets hired on Wall Street.
On the flip side, if you decide to settle for just a high school diploma, your options are still limited.

What if you want to be a doctor?
No matter how many people you know, you'll never get there without a degree, not to mention medical school, which you cannot get into without a degree.
What about a lawyer?
Well, you certainly need a degree to get into law school. To even take the bar exam, you need a degree.
Scientist?
Well, now, you won't get that research job unless you prove that you've learned how to do it... by earning a degree.
Psychologist/Psychiatrist?
You need a degree to be certified to practice.
You see where I'm going with this. By and large, many people can do fine without a degree. My point is that for certain people with certain goals, you can't do anything without one.
Hope this helps!

I believe I don't agree and disagree. If we have a new staff to train, I always told them that no matter how, where, what school you come from, attitude comes first before your degree. I don't care if you have the degree or not, as long you have the right attitude, you have the right to be with us. Now, the degree counts, cause there where we check your promotion.

no. i disagree. there are many many many jobs UNAVALIABLE to people without degrees. i dont know the exact statistics, but i do know that people who do not earn a college degree make probably half as much as people who have a college degree. if you do not have a degree you will be working at a job that probably pays something like minimum wage. you will be working in fast food or at a clothing store. if you can afford it, i think a degree and the experience of college and hard work and effort are well worth it.

Reality check!
It is not just the U.S. It is a worldwide attitude towards employment.
Once it only mattered which college you went to ,if it mattered at all.
Now it is which college, which Uni and who you are related to and associated with.
But when it comes down to the crunch it does matter that you made good grades as employers like to brag about their new honors graduate.
In lots of areas the head hunting, begins in your final years at University.

A more positive attitude might help - a degree is like everything else - it's what you do with it that counts. Doing a degree might just open the door to 'the who you know'.

you ask a good question
recently, i just graduated with a four-year degree, magna c.um laude, with a 3.9 for last semester, and 3.5 GPA overall
guess what i'm doing now... physical security... i'm "hoping" to become a clerk as a step up
i think the problem is certainly "connections", but thats just life; we HAVE to network and really be assertive
that, and going to college, and pick a "practical" major & internship & and going above and beyond
right now, i'm learning that the hard way, but i wont give up yet

No I don't agree. You might not be able to get the job you want, but an education is still worth it. Even with a degree you are still you.
