i can't remember where i heard it from. i always figured that my cell phone works because it picks up a signal from tmobile.

Err no...cell phones work by transmitting and receiving waves...similar to sound waves or radio waves...nothing to do with other universes or alternate dimensions.

Hmmm....this question could be an interesting one but it is not asked completly correctly....cell phones use high frequencies radio waves, called microwaves, that are just another form of electromagnetic waves like light.
How electromagnetic waves propagate in space and time is somewhat a mystery. Even if we have equations that describe their behavior we still are trying to understand some of the basic properties of space and time and the origin of matter.
In string theory extra dimensions are used to try to derive the fundamental properties of matter and energy like electromagnetic radiation. One of the results of string theory is that the particles that carry the different form of energy can be described as little pieces of a string made of pure energy.
This strings are somehow attached to the fabric of space and time with the exception of gravity that is a closed loop so it cannot attach to space and time (it doesn't have open ends to use to stick to space and time). That means that gravity can actually leak to other dimensions of space and time and leave our universe. This explains why gravity is so weak as a force in comparison with electromagnetism for example.
So, even if your question is not clear, this could be what maybe you were remembering.
In a sense we could say that in general we can see, use radio waves for communication and so on because electromagnetic waves are confined to this universe and do not leak out as gravity does. This why we don't use gravity radios or cell phones (in theory it could be possible) because it takes too much energy to produce such gravity waves that would carry the information.
So even if the fact that cell phones work doesn't prove there are other dimensions is one of the pieces of the puzzle that could reveal eventually that our unvierse has many more dimensions that we can perceive.
Interesting question after all.

in a way you are right - all cell phone companies are from another Universe or dimension. You ever try to get an answer from their support people? They hide in black holes and laugh at you. then take your money - then they laugh some more, while hiding in other universes.

Just like the earth is square now, yes... Cell phones are sattelite recievers, so unless your satellite is down, your are your own god, go you, go.

lol. Columbus had to prove to Spain and Europe the earth was round, if you still can't grasp cell phone tech than maybe you shouldn't use one....
