geckos should not have any substrate that they can ingest. Safe substrates include : newpaper, butcher paper, indoor/outdoor carpet (no fray edges) . There are other things that you can use. Watch to make sure that your leo is still going to the bathroom, as he may get a blockage.
Good Luck

Ground walnut shells are a very poor choice for gecko substrate. Some people have claimed that walnut shells have given their animals intestinal blockage sometimes leading to death.
Butcher paper or newspaper is clean.cheap & easy to change but looks like crap.
Artificial turfs are probably safe other than harboring wasted food, feces & bacteria. Not the easiest to clean properly.
I prefer to make my own out of combinations of soil, gravel & cypress mulch. Spot clean by diggin out any feces or other wastes & replacing the mix.

Ground walnut is meant to be safe if ingested in small quantities. Repti-bark is a safe alternative too, and it tends to cut down on odor (I think it looks pretty nice too). Calcium sand looks nice, but can have serious health implications to the animal (even though it's marketed as 'edible & beneficial'). If you've given up on aesthetics, you could always just use black and white news paper in the terrarium, or consider using a separate container to feed the lizard in.

I use calcium sand in all of my leopard gecko cages. I've been using it for 5 years and have never had a problem with it. It comes in many different colors and everything. I use ground walnut in all my mali uromastyx and skink cages. If you have any questions feel free to email me at brandibear1983@yahoo.com

Sand is very safe for leopard geckos. I have one that i call Ding-A-Ling, who always misses his food and you can get sand that is safe for a leopard gecko, also it is small and will not clog their air ways. Hope this will help you. :)
