Yes, it was a dive. Don't mistake contact being a foul. Football is not a non-contact sport, contact is allowed. The contact Woodgate made on Ronaldo wouldn't have knocked a 6 year old to the floor, so why a fully grown man in absolute superb athletic shape.
I just wish the cowards in football would speak up a bit more (Hello "pundits" Jamie Redknapp and Ray Wilkins). If Ronaldo and his like are going to continue to be told they are doing nothing wrong then they will not stop.
Fair play to the 'Boro bench for calling it like it is (actually using the word "cheat". Just a shame southgate bottled it in the interview after.
And to the people who say "when you're running and get touched it knocks you down", you obviously don't play football. I play every week and I can tell you it would take an awful lot more than that to knock somone off their feet. Next time you're watching a match, ignore the penalty area and watch play in midfield. You will see that knocks like Ronaldo got last night are so bread and butter that 99% of the time the person wouldn't even pay any attention to getting clipped. Get out and play a match and you will see what it takes to knock someone down. What Woodgate did wasn't nearly enough.

Ronaldo travels so quickly that if he gets touched his balance is lost, causing him to go over. I'd like to think if that happened at the Turf and it was one of our players getting caught like that, it would be a penalty.
Woodgate being an 'ahem' international defender should have known this, and that Ronaldo is labelled (correctly or incorrectly) as a diver he should've stayed on his feet.
I agree that not every contact is a foul with football being a contact sport but when one of your legs is clipped, the ball isn't played and the defender isn't on his feet I'm afraid it is a foul.
If it was your teams winger in the box on the end of Woodgates challenge, would you be shouting for a penalty?
Yup thought so....

A reckless challenge from Woodgate resulting in a definite penalty......It was about as dodgy as the one in the first tie (to George Boetang "You can't head the ball clear with your hands above your head")
I bet any Middlesborough player would have gone down from the same contact at the other end

Ronaldo is an exceptional player at the very top of his game. There is nothing I would like to see more than someone break his legs...BUT... if somebody fouls you in the box then they have to expect to give away a penalty. The penalty is given for the foul and not because of the theatrics by the fouled player, sometimes the slightest of touches when moving at top speed and controlling the ball can take the goal scoring opportunity away and therefore a penalty is deserved...BUT... I think the questions is, Would the penalty have been given if the foul was at the other end? I will be the first to answer and say defiantly not!!!

Of course it was a dodgy decision on your part, BUT, you were not the referee at Old Trafford last night were you. In my opinion I believe the right decision was made.

i would have preferred he made more of an effort to stay on his feet, there was a square ball on to rooney, so i could be doing the fella an injustice, but he does run at defences with speed, and an intelligent placed clip can sent you flying, either way, the replays show beyond doubt woodgate made contact with his ankle and right knee, he should know better.

If you are running at the speed he does and you get clipped, you dont have much say in the matter. You are gonna hit the dirt. It was only slight contact but it was contact and it did prevent a goalscoring chance.

it was hard to decide but when you get challenged, you take it all the way to gain advantage over the other player. it will be diving/faking if he is too obvious in faking it.
