There are both size and weight restrictions so if it's a really big package, then it might be cheaper to send it by Royal Mail Standard Parcels. Recorded Delivery only gets you a signature. It does not insure the item beyond a value of £32. If you want more insurance, use Special Delivery which costs £18.40 for a package up to 10 kilos, much less of course for lighter items.

Allthough I use this service a lot I don't actually know the max. I think if the parcel goes over 2Kg with Royal Mail the parcel then has to go by Parcel Force. I have put the two links here:

I think it's 2 KG, any heavier and it has to go with parcelforce.
