Do I need to buy a more "powerful" router? Or is there some sort of setting I can change? Or is there a such thing as an in-between signal amplifier?

As Mike C said, you can change the aerial.
You could also get a repeater, this will pick up the signal and send it out again. You can place this in between your router and your living room. A repeater will repeat any signal within a certain raduis. There is also the option of buying a more powerful router, but you shouldn't have to do that!

If your router has an aerial socket and not a fixed aerial then you can improve your range simply by installing a better aerial.
