Aged 44, Cleopatra did die from the venom of an asp, but not how your history tells it. Cleopatra had always experimented with poisons. She would often ask her personal physician to give her poisons which she would test out on servants she disliked, both male and female. She would invite them to eat with her and would give them poisoned food. She would then watch to see how long it would take for them to die and what kind of death they had. Their bodies would then be removed and nothing more would be said. At the time Cleopatra committed suicide, she again tested the venom of the asp on one of her servants to see how long it would take to die. When Marc Antony found her dead, there was a servant girl lying on the floor dead. Cleopatra had tested out the asp's venom on the girl first. Within moments it had worked, so she then used it on herself knowing the Romans were not far away.

The ancient sources suggest she died by snake bite.
In Plutarch, Antony 86. The snakebite story is generally believed and we want it to be true, because it is highly dramatic and very appropriate. The "asp" was almost certainly an Egyptian cobra, which was sometimes used to execute criminals. Yet Plutarch notes that there was also a story that she took poison. He points out that no trace of a snake was found, except perhaps for a trail in the sand by the sea next to the mausoleum (or, according to Dio Cassius 51.11.5, and perhaps more plausibly, the palace) where she died, though some said that two small puncture wounds were found. Her handmaidens Iras and Charmion died with her, apparently also of poison, yet a cobra could only be relied to kill one person. So, either more than one snake was smuggled in or they took poison while she died of snakebite.
I was interested in how Sushmita had managed to find what sounded like a first person perspective story of Cleopatra's death, so I followed the link and this is the first thing that I read on it,

Cleopatra's children were captured except Caesarion who fled to the south. She really wants to die but she has no weapon to kill herself. She begins a hunger strike, she rapidly weakens but Octavianus threatens her: if she dies, her children will be killed. She accepts to eat again but she's still weak. She shows repentence, she offers jewels to Octavianus and she even tries to seduce him. Octavianus is now persuaded that she wants to stay alive. The departure for Rome is in three days, just enough for Cleopatra to prepare her suicide. She asks her servants Iras and Charmion to bring her a snake in a fruit basket. Meanwhile she writes a letter to Octavianus asking him to be put next to Antony after her death. When Antony receives the letter, it's too late, Cleopatra is found dead with her two servants. She has made it, the 39 years old glorious queen had once again won ... It seems that nothing could stop her, not even death.

This is what i could find out:
When Octavian reached Cleopatra's monument, she refused to let them in. When they finally got through the window, she tried to stab herself, but was stopped and taken prisoner in her mausoleum. Now Cleopatra no longer wanted to live. So she devised a plan in which she would commit suicide.
First, she acted as if she were sick. She asked Octavian for a doctor. Once the physician arrived, she whispered something to him and sent him on his way. Once "well" again, she ordered for her finest clothes and jewelry. After taking a bath, she asked if she could go visit Antony's tomb. After Cleopatra got back, she ordered a large feast. Surprisingly, Octavian allowed this. So Cleopatra and her servants sat in silence and ate their last meal together.
After the meal, a strange old lady arrived at the door of Cleopatra's mausoleum, asking the guard if she could give a basket of figs to the queen. She sat the basket down, bowed to Cleopatra, and left. About the same time, Octavian received a note. When he opened it, he found Cleopatra's plea that he would allow her to be buried in Antony's tomb. With that, he sent servants to go check on her.
Once the guards got to her, it was too late. She was lying peacefully on her bed with her two servants dying at her feet. Two pricks were found on Cleopatra's neck. Many people believe that Cleopatra ordered someone to put an asp in the basket of figs for her suicide. After she had been bitten, her two servants, Iras and Charmain, repeated Cleopatra's actions. She was buried with Mark Antony as she wished.
More than two thousand years after her death, she is still looked upon as one of the greatest rulers of Egypt. In a world where women were looked down upon and had very little power, she fought to control the destiny of nations. Because she failed, Egypt slowly disappeared and the Roman Empire and the Mediterranean becomes a Roman lake.
Good luck

People say she poisoned herself...but who would know the truth since it was Romans who wrote the death of Cleopartra? Maybe little Caesar raped her and put the queen into suicide...
