It seems to me that smokers have a tendency to make friends more easily. Is that just me? They all gather around and bond on their smoking breaks. People smoking always seem to have people around them. And out of all the people I know, it seems like the smokers have a tendency to be more outgoing. Is it the smoking that makes them social, or their natural sociability that makes them smokers?

I don't necessarily think that they are more social but the social bonding that does occur (you're absolutely right) as they congregate is a big part of what feeds the habit I think. When I quit what I missed most was the standing around and talking with my fellow smokers. I've since fallen off the wagon.

I'm a smoker (and yes I know it's a bad habit) and I'm quite sociable. I can see what you are talking about with people gathering around and socializing during a smoke break. I see it constantly. Non-smokers of course want to analyze it as being an "excuse" for people to smoke or an "excuse" to take a break when it's absolutely NO different than a group of people gathering for a beer or a cup of coffee. It has to do with subconsciously partaking in an activity with people that obviously enjoy the same things as we do. A person who's deeply into computers to the point of being considered a "nerd" isn't going to go out of their way to hang out with a bunch of jocks. It's just human nature. We naturally flock to those who have the same interests as us.

However, I'm hesitant to say that because someone smokes, it makes them a sociable person. I know many smokers that no one wants anything to do with! In the end, I think the sociability factor has to do with the person's personality versus their habits, be it good ones or bad ones.

Interesting question by the way! =)

It is a proven fact that smokers have more sceritonin released(gives u a content happy sensation) they're better tippers and a lot more relaxed. Smoking is to be avoided at all cost. Your body reacts to certian circumstances to release seritonin, if u start smoking it releases more, but causes inhibitors from seritonin being released from pleasurable events. In effect the only thing that makes u feel good is smoking. Trust me avoid it. If u feel not outgoing c a psychiatrist and get prescribed something like focalin XR, it is a serritonin reuptake inhibitor, (keeps your body from breaking down sceritonin) hence you are in a good mood all day and outgoing. no known side effects so far but it is a new drug. best of luck! Yes, I agree. It wasn't like that when I smoked years ago, but under the regime of smoking bans, smokers gather together in adversity which becomes a very social gathering.

I use to wait tables and always preferred the smoking section. The non-smoking section was 3 to 5 times busier, but the smokers were more laid back and understanding. If the restaurant was extremely busy and their order was taking longer than it should---they'd just order another drink, light up, smile, and crack a joke. You also had better odds at repeat clientele that would request you---therefore, better tips. You could work less and make more money than the rest turnin' & burnin'---no punn intended.

You are right, my friend ... we are, we are. The reason is that when you smoke, you go to a smokers' corner or other such place. Other people - strangers - join you. Its not possible to just sit there and puff away. So you strike up a conversation. As a result, this attitude spreads to other walks of life too. And the rest is history.
