It is 485
1X3+2 = 5
5X3+2 = 17
17X3+2 = 53
53X3+2 = 161
161X3+2 = 485

observe that:

1 = 2 - 1
5 = 6 - 1
17 = 18 - 1
53 = 54 - 1
161 = 162 - 1

also observe that:

2*3 = 6
6*3 = 18
18*3 = 54
54*3 = 162

therefore the next number is (162*3) - 1 = 485

**********

here's a more obvious way to look at it:

the sequence starts with 1

1*3 + 2 = 5
5*3 + 2 = 17
17*3 + 2 = 53
53*3 + 2 = 161

therefore the next number is 161*3 + 2 = 485

Pattern would appear to be x by 3 add 2
Next number = 3 x 161 + 2 = 485

This is the general term
Tn= 3*T(n-1) + 2

Next term = 161*3 + 2 = 485

Each number new number is the base number + 3 times the difference between the base number and the next oldest number

So the next number would be

Base number + 3(161-53)

161 + 3(108)

161 + 324

485

485.... The difference between the first 2 number is 4, the nxt difference is 4 times 3.. and so on and so fro so the last difference is 324.. therefore the nxt number in squence is 324 plus 161 =485

485. The pattern stars with 4 and then multiplies itself by 3 to get to the next number.

1 + 4 = 5
4 x 3 = 12
5 + 12 = 17

And so on until you get 485 for the next #

f(n) = 3*f(n - 1) + 2

So the next number is 3 * 161 + 2

= 485

T1 = 1
T2 = (T1 * 3) + 2 = 3 +2 = 5
T3 = (T2 * 3) + 2 = 15 +2 = 17
T4 = (T3 * 3) + 2 = 51 +2 = 53
T5 = (T4 * 3) + 2 = 159+2 = 161
T6 = (T5 * 3) + 2 = 483+2 = 485

>>485
