Everytime I see their filmclips they look sooooo try-hard! They seem to want to portray this 'we're really evil' gothic look, but their music is more like Green Day meets Queen (no offence to either band!). Their songs are all 'epics' and just seem so over-the-top. Does anyone (over the age of 13) actually like their music? Just wondering! Thanks.

Cool! Thanks for your replies so far! And thanks for not yelling at me! I just wanted to know what kind of an audience they have, as I'm a primary school teacher and the (more street-wise) 11 and 12 year olds like them a lot!

24 year old here who actually does like My Chemical Romance.

Do I take them seriously? Musically, yes. They're pretty adept at writting catchy pop songs, and they obviously appeal to younger fans. As far as the lyrics and theatrics go, I'm fairly confident it's meant to be "over-the-top" and campy, much like Queen.

Also, bear in mind Gerard Way aspired to be a comic book artist before joining the band. I think that much of their look and the basic direction of their videos is fully intended to take on the look of a gritty "goth" comic. I don't think they're trying to look "evil", per say, but they're definitely trying to look like characters sprung to life from Neil Gaimen's comics (read Sandman).

That's my opinion, anyway.

let me tell ya..When their cd "three cheers for sweet revenge" came out, I loved it. I was going through a terrible break up and was feeling really depressed so that cd helped a lot with all of my mixed emotions. Yes, I thought all the songs were really morbid and weird, and I liked that. I actually had no idea what they looked liked really when i first started listening to them..and I didnt care, i just loved how their music made me feel. I didnt judge them. That was some years ago..I don't really listen to them much anymore and anyway both copies of that same cd I have are really scratched so I cant anyway. I can still sing along to some of those older songs from them when they come on the radio..it doesnt really feel the same though b/c im not in the same place I was emotionally or mentally when i used to. I've heard very little of their latest songs and I don't know..I guess they hold a little place in my heart.

I agree with what you're saying. I'm 25, and into old school gothic music, and I find it funny that all these bands are trying so hard to look goth, but their music is mainstream. But I do have a friend who is in her twenties and loves them. I've always found that most MTV sponsored bands, which you have to admit that is My Chemical Romance is -- no one would listen to them if they didn't have their music videos played constantly -- to be lacking in the originality department.

i do. I'm 18 and i love them. they are truely musical artist and their lyrics are very meaning full. i dont think they try so hard. i love them and everything about them. their image isnt so gothic anymore they actually look normal in their new video i dont love you. which i love by the way. they are simply the best.

oh and yeah most of their songs about death but thats cus gerard the vocalist and writter said when he was 8 he realized everyone dies and it made a huge impact on how he sees life.
and to set the record straight they dont right about commiting suicide. the complete opposite they write about not comminting suicide. and to think positive. such songs like (headfirst for halos, famous last words)
and at most of their concerts they gave a good message that brings up most of their fans self esteem like at one gerard said you guys are awesome and dont let anyone else tell you different. if they dont think your awesome its because their jealous of you. they are a reallly good band.

mcr is actually my favorite band! when famous last words came out, i downloaded it right away into my ipod. i would like to correct u when u said they want to portray this gothic look. only gerard way seems to be the only one who's over-reacting in their vids. (fyi gerard is the frontman) so, if u have a prob with them being try-hard and gothic, blame emo music and gerard way. i never really liked him coz he sounds gay during interviews.
