a. (1/4)(1 - cos 2x + cos 4x - cos 2x cos 4x)

This is obtained as follows, by using the "cos 2z" formula in two different forms:

cos 2z = 2 cos^2 z - 1 = 1 - 2 sin^2 z. Therefore:

sin^2 x = (1 - cos 2x) / 2, and cos^2 2x = (1 + cos 4x) / 2.

Thus sin^2 x cos^2 2x = (1/4) (1 - cos 2x) (1 + cos 4x)

= (1/4)(1 - cos 2x + cos 4x - cos 2x cos 4x)
