Things have changed ~now every serious swimmer uses them ..... but way back when ....

~goggles were unreliable.. they fell off your face when you dive in... and then you have to finish the race with them dragging around your neck. We used them in training but not for racing.

~the strap would deteriate within six months and you couldn't get them tight enough to keep them on.

~goggles didn't work very well... they used to have like a foam edge that consistently leaked.. you often found yourself swimming with one eye cup full of water... very distracting.

~goggles were really expensive.. not everyone could afford to own them. (they are still really expensive IMHO).

~goggles were not the sexy fashion accessory that they are today. They were chunky, they created water resistence and they were more of a risk during a race than they were a benefit.

There are a couple answers i can give you:
1. Its the "sav" thing to do
2. Some people aren't bothered by the water in their eyes
3. Lack of $$$
4. Bet
5. They are trying to swim with their eyes closed and visualize the water and their technique. (my coach makes us do this every now and again but very rarely. and only at practice.)
