Good question.

I choose responsibility. My conscience wouldn't allow me to neglect responsibilities just to fulfill a desire. The key to happiness is to balance the two. I am a responsible person & I uphold my obligations (to friends, family, finances, etc) yet still find a way to do and have the things I desire.

I hate my job but I have to go to work to pay the mortgage. Sure I'd love to just paint & write songs but I'm realistic enough to know that I need a steady income to live on. Some people will pick up & leave everything behind to follow their dreams. While there is a certain romance to the idea & it makes a good movie, in real life I couldn't live with myself if I just abandoned my obligations to pursue a dream. I'm a practical dreamer...I pursue my desires only to the degree that I can while still being responsible (I'm a bit of a control freak. I'm not willing to surrender to chaos completely!)

I'd like to think my responsibilities are first and foremost to myself. However, if i have to choose b/n a desire and a responsibility (doing what's right instead of what's easy or not) chances are my desire may not have been a wholesome one, to begin with. Because desire is driven by emotions (and selfishness) and responsibility is the question you need to give an answer to when the smoke clears. Whether its of money matter or a sexual gratification, if i have a responsibility not to take it (spend it, have it) i would rather not! Because you can say no to your desires ("what you feel isn't what matters, it's what you do") and it would actually make you a strong confident person but saying no to your responsibilities won't do you any good; coz you won't be able to respect yourself after your lust is appeased.

Responsibility

Responsibilities should come first if you have a desire to succeed in life. For example, do your homework before you get on the phone to chat with your friends. Run an errand for your mom when asked to avoid friction at home. After all, teenagers don't have all that many responsibilities that they are overburdened and don't have time for any fun. They just need to learn to prioritize. This will certainly pay off later in life.

I would find a MIDDLE PATH
Definitely responsibility takes the first place over desires.
We have to follow some society norms so we cannot let our desires rule us.
If our desires do not harm us or society and we can afford to do certain things, then why not. But if they are hindering our responsibility then we should have better sense to do our duty.
A person who is wealthy can go for water sports and mountain sports and car racing,as he has enough money to take care of his family's needs. But a person who has to educate his children, pay rent, take care of his elderly parents, cannot think of going for sky diving and river rafting.

Responsibility is a relative term.
Desires depend on how much a person can afford.

friend, i know what it is like when u have to make a decision between responsibility n desire. by the grace of GOD, i made the decision according to my DHARMA, despite feeling very sad due to my desire. but now, after 1 and half years I can tell u it was the right decision. GOD rewarded me for the decision in many ways at the same there were a lot of tests. the path is tough, but only the tough path brings out the best in u. choose for the resposibility friend, u won't regret it. all the best.

Desire

I would honestly choose responsibility cuz, my son is part of my responsibility and I could never take him away from my life. Wanting your desires over responsibilities makes you selfish. Responsibilities are what make a person mature. Fullfilling desires only make you less mature and you'll never grow up and learn what life is really about.

Desire is only a thought construct invented by the individual whereas responsibilities are a burden that the individual has already accepted. Discharge responsibilities and then follow desires if able.

In my opinion one should choose responsibility because desire is a short term gain whereas in responsibility one gains long term.
E.g I have a desire to sleep with a girl, and i get an opportunity but on the same day and time I have to appear in an exam (final exam)
If I go for desire i will loose in long term, if i go for responsibility i loose in short term but gain in long term
