Check for spyware using Adaware (www.lavasoft.com) and Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html)
Do a disk clean up: open my computer, right click on your hard disk (usually c:), select properties from the context menu that appears, click disk cleanup (button next to the pie chart that appears).
When this has completed, then defrag your hard disk: open my computer, right click on your hard disk, choose the tools tab and then click defragment option.
Hopefully, this will speed up your machine.
If not, try finding any services that may be running in the background that you don't need. For example, the IIS service might be running on you machine. This only needs to be running if you are hosting asp or asp.net web sites from your machine which is unlikely.
Also, don't run programs in your start up that you don't need. This includes the Microsoft Office Toolbar (if installed).
Hope this helps.
