"Invaders from outside" (i.e terrorism), political fighting between the ruling class and the Senate (Dem and Republicans), borders that have grown too large and indefensible, an increasing populace indifferance. Sounds like Rome right? No. How about right here in America. What can we do to prevent our own "fall"?

I think it moreover is reminiscent of a Grecian tragedy- perhaps a Plato or Plutarch.
One key reason Rome collapsed internally was because of a concentration of vested wealth among the political elite rather than the many- leading to inefficient farm production and the alienation of the minor land-cropper.
Sad how history repeats. When Roma Nova starts recalling the troops fgrom the outer provionces- then you'll know collapse is imminent.
Finally I quote Abraham Lincoln:
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. "
Abraham Lincoln

and Roosevelt (Theodore):
"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -

According to Livy there was an early consular election, about 400 BC, when the brother of the winning candidate was the person responsible for overseeing the ballots. The public felt outraged, and were getting restive.

The consul elect distracted the angry crowds by accusing the neighbouring Sabines of harbouring outlaws who robbed in Rome, but hid over the border. The patriotic Romans came to the support of the eagles, and anybody questioning the legitimacy of the Commander in Chief were accused of treason.

We have seen the brothers Gracchi reappear, trying to liberalize the Republic and being assassinated for their efforts. We have seen the increase in wealth and influence within the equestrian order. Now we are seeing Caesar and Pompey squaring off against Cato and the Boni, when politics mattered more than the public good, and the state was betrayed into a dictatorship.

Given the existence of the huge class of disenfranchised proletarians who will nonetheless furiously support any government that will feed them, entertain them and tell them who to hate, how can the state be saved?

In Rome the Republic died of apathy.

Yes, we have huge similarities to the fall of Rome. We have degradation of our moral infrastructure, destruction of the family, invasion of the barbarians (Mexicans) and on and on and on, exactly like Rome.

I've seen this and have advocated this fact here several times now. It's so obvious and disturbing but more frustrating because no one seems to care, also just like Rome's apathy to it's demise. I fear we are a doomed country, unraveling from within with petty bickering politicians that in control and mastering the art of "doing nothing" when they should be addressing issues such as Social Security, Immigration and more.....

It is nice to see someone thinking here, instead of just pushing their political opinions...plus you actuall asked a question which is rare here. Oh....yes I do. Very insightful question. The fall is imminent I am afraid, unless major changes take place. I am not just talking about the guy in charge either....EVERYONE needs to change,
