I'd say make a calorie debt that will get you to your desired weight in an appropriate time. Here's what you do:
1) add up how many Calories you eat each day (fuzzy math works well here)
2) subtract about 2000-2500 Calories for typical body functions everyone goes through each day (walking, talking, heart pumping, etc.)
3) subtract how many Calories you burned for the day through physical activity (use 1000 calories/hr for sustained running as a benchmark)
4) note that one pound of fat has 3500 Calories.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you drink a lot of soda, I'd suggest cutting that out of your diet and replacing it with water or, at the very least, diet soda. I lost 20 pounds in a little over a month doing that.
