do you have any bills?
Are you going to rent?
Do you smoke?
Are you a heavy drinker?
Will you have a car?
Will you use public transport?
You need to be a bit more specific.

Oh, anywhere from 200 bucks in a tent and some grub all the way to several billion an hour, depending on your lifestyle.

But you can probably live pretty decently for around 2k / month, I would assume, so long you're not in a motel room or on vacation, that would cost more, I'd have 3 or 4 thousand to be safe, and I'm figuring this in USD thou AUD isn't that far apart.

In order to get a Student visa, you must be able to show that you have access to $18,000 per year but actual living expenses will be at least 50% more than that. So, to get a visa, $1500 per month but to live, more like $2250/month if you live very frugally.

Just add up: house/room rent, food, essentials like power, water, bed-things, toiletries, commutation, some pocket money, some essential diversions/entertainment, some 'secrity money' for emergency, newspaper/mag's, internet use -- all this as per personal taste and preference!
