It has to be judicious in the use of its military power and its economic influences. A superpower can't be isolationist, but its got to be cautious in its use of power.

200 years ago there weren't any superpowers as we now define them. There were "great powers," which generally were colonial powers.
Superpowers are a 20th Century phenomenon that didn't occur until after World War II. No superpowers have been able to isolate themselves from the rest of the world.
So, intervention is more or less a fact of the existence of a superpower. Right now there is only one superpower--the U.S. China and possibly India are likely to become superpowers in the next few decades if not sooner. Superpowers rely on international trade and economics and have significant import/export interests.
They differ from colonial or imperial powers in the extent to which they intervene and the duration of such intervention. Under colonialism and imperialism intervention was intended to be more or less permanent. Superpowers generally intend intervention in foreign countries to be temporary.
