I have A '98 Ford F-150 Super Cab 4.6 V8. I just got it 3 weeks ago. The engine light flashes for a little while then stays on. If i give it a little gas it starts to shake and spit and sputters, but if I give it alot of gas or idle I have no problems. Im thinking its the plugs and/or wires. Is their something else i need to worry about?

you are probably right about the plugs and wires. change both at the same time, and use dielectric grease on the spark plug boots to prolong the lifespan of the new parts. if the misfire goes away, the light will eventually go out as soon as the computer sees no failure in 15 or so drive cycles. you may want to carefully clean the little wires on the maf sensor, and change the fuel and air filter.

Yes, if it clears up when accelerating, it just may be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. If the light is coming on and going off.It is detecting a problem and Auto Zone can ccheck this out for free.It may not be a sensor that is bad and the ECM is detecting possibly an emission problem like running too rich. That is why I suggest possible fuel problem.Too much gas is getting into the cylinders and causing the spit and sputters. If it turns out to be the fuel regulator, change engine oil and filter.Alot of gas will have seeped pass the piston rings and get into your crank case and dillute the oil and in turn can cause bearing failure.

it has little to do with either spark or wires.... you backyard mechanics are full of crappy advice.....

It is probably your TPS or throttle position sensor.... you are almost definatly getting too much fuel in the engine so it could also be a mass air-flow sensor MAF, the manifold Air temperature sensor MAT which has alot to do with emissions control... it could even be an O2 sensor as that governs the AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) as well.... go to WAL-MART and get an OBD II code reader ($20 bucks or so) and scan your fault codes.... that will tell you where to start looking.
now....
why isnt it the plugs and wires? it starts and runs fine at idle..... spark doesnt change from idle to full throttle... so be wary of the advice you take... could cost u huge

shamus is so full o sh-- his eyes are brown.tell me where your shop is so I dont go there.------tune her up first then go from there.sensers go off for a reason and a bad set of plugs will set all kinds of codes.just because a senser goes off it doesnt mean its a senser, its telling you to fix a problem.check the vac. hoses for leaks and throw some injecter cleaner in the tank.

if the check engine light is on go to autozone and they can hook it up to a code reader and give you a general idea whats wrong and its free
