There are many different contexts in which it can be used... basically heterogeneity means something is made up of a diverse variety of things. It's the opposite of homogeneous, meaning that it's made up of identical things. But it can be used to describe lots of things, like chemical mixtures (homogeneous vs. heterogeneous mixtures), or like biology stuff, like heterogeneous alleles.
