two things cause your problem. lack of airflow: dirty air filters, circulation motor running on too slow a speed, unit is too large for application. the second is that it is low on refrigerant.

If the coil outside is freezing it usually means the freon is low, call a tech.

It is most likely low on refrigerant.

If it's a window type unit that is totally sealed, even they lose refrigerant. Have it charged and it will be ok.

The reversing valve in the system is probably sticking and causing the system to stay in cooling mode too long. AC units are designed to go into auto defrost mode if they get too cold, and it sounds like yours isn't going into defrost mode.

If your unit does not have the auto defrost that Tunsa mentioned, or if it is failing, your problem would be solved by raising the thermostat.

not enough or low refrigerant gas pressure in the system - may be due to leakage. needs a repairman to fix it
